This year’s theme was “When I Grow Up I Hope…,” and Sun’s hand-drawn piece depicted a futuristic landscape where human infrastructure floated in the clouds, leaving the natural habitat on the ground undisturbed for wildlife. Sun submitted a drawing for Google’s annual Doodle 4 Google contest, a competition that seeks original artwork from students across the country for their website. At the back of the room hung a large print of one of Sun’s original drawings, a piece of artwork that may land him a top prize from Google. Instead, he entered the gymnasium on May 29 to raucous cheers and shouts of encouragement from a capacity crowd that included his peers, his teachers, his family and representatives from one of the world’s largest tech companies. ![]() Norris Sun was expecting to spend his final day as a fifth-grader at Aspen Crossing Elementary helping to move chairs from the gym to the library.
